_The Junior Woman’s Club of Verona hosted its annual Spelling Bee on Saturday, Jan. 28, and it was a great s-u-c-c-e-s-s. Thirty-two fourth- and fifth-grade Verona students participated in the Bee, which was judged by Bob Manley, deputy mayor of Verona; Jeffrey Monacelli, principal of Forest Avenue School; and Adele Spong, co-president of the Verona Juniors.
The announcer was Joanna Breitenbach, co-president of the Verona Juniors. Chloe Mathewson, a fourth grader at Laning Avenue School, took first place after correctly spelling the last two words of the competition: “eyewitness” and “petite.” Charles Torikian, a fifth grader at H.B. Whitehorne Middle School, came in second place. Maxine Haralambiev, a fourth grader at Laning Avenue School, claimed the third-place spot. All three students will now move on to the Regional Spelling Bee, which will take place in Kearny on Feb. 25.
